Literacy skills are a key component of academic success and lifelong learning. Yet many children and teens, especially from underserved communities, struggle to develop literacy skills. Improving literacy rates among Ontario youth is a vital component in ensuring that more Ontarians achieve success throughout their school years, and beyond.

At Big Little Books, we’re on a mission to empower youth for a brighter future, one book at a time. We’re equipping Ontario youth with the knowledge and skills they need to build foundational literacy skills. Our friendly tournaments and thought-provoking workshops help Ontario youth find both joy and empowerment through literacy. With a particular focus on supporting underserved communities and their youth, we’ve partnered schools and libraries throughout Ontario to deliver our community-oriented programs.

Our literacy programs are funded by grants, and made possible by our dedicated team of volunteers and community partners. Want to support Big Little Books in our mission to empower youth through literacy? We’d love to have you on our volunteer team!

Here are three ways you be a part of the Big Little Books volunteer team, and help youth build the literacy skills they need to succeed:

1. Help Students Prepare for Book Tournaments

Our Big Little Books Battles are highly interactive, motivating students to read up to 20 books in preparation for the trivia tournament. We’d love your help keeping students on track with their reading goals.

2. Forge Community Connections

From interviewing authors for our blog to fostering partnerships with libraries and schools, you can help us grow the Big Little Books community.

3. Create Educational Materials

The most effective way for us to reach youth is often through social media platforms. Have an idea for a fun Tiktok or informative Instagram post on youth literacy? Join our marketing team!

If you would like to volunteer with us, please send us an email at adminteam@biglittlebooks.ca.
